The long and short of the Vicky Sixpence line

Many of the esoteric British coin books note that sixpences of 1856 and 1857 have either a long or short line under the word "PENCE" without showing any sort of picture to clarify it.

Dealers do not distinguish the varieties, as a rule, and the valuations appear to be the same.
